Over 200 Containers of Expired, Smuggled Drugs Destroyed by Customs

Date:

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), in collaboration with the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and other regulatory agencies, has destroyed a large cache of expired and illicit drugs in Lagos as part of ongoing efforts to combat drug smuggling and trafficking.

The destruction exercise, which took place at a dumpsite in Epe on Friday, was aimed at eliminating harmful pharmaceuticals from circulation. A statement shared on social media on Sunday emphasized that this move is a significant step in Nigeria’s fight against dangerous substances.

Speaking at the event, Assistant Comptroller of Customs, Oluwaseun Oguntuase, who represented the service, warned of the severe health risks posed by expired drugs and reiterated Customs’ commitment to preventing their entry into the country.

“Many of these drugs are expired, and expired drugs must not be allowed into the country. That is why they were seized,” Oguntuase said. He also commended the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, for reinforcing enforcement measures, which have resulted in the interception of over 200 containers of contraband.

Representing the National Security Adviser, Ibrahim Suleiman highlighted the joint efforts of multiple agencies, including the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), in ensuring the removal and destruction of illicit drugs.

“The committee was convened to ensure that illicit drugs are removed from the ports and destroyed because the National Security Adviser is deeply concerned that these drugs—which fuel crimes and social problems—should not remain at the ports or other places where they are seized. They must be destroyed,” Suleiman said.

He added that the first phase of the destruction targeted seizures from Apapa Port, Tincan Island Port, FOU, and Lekki Port, while a similar operation was conducted in Port Harcourt before returning to Lagos for the second phase.

Speaking on behalf of the NDLEA, Deputy Commander Solomon Omotosho confirmed that individuals linked to the seized drugs are already facing prosecution. He warned those involved in the illegal trade to desist or face severe legal consequences.

“Those engaged in the importation of these substances should know that the law will catch up with them,” Omotosho cautioned.

The agencies reaffirmed their commitment to continuing crackdowns on illicit drugs and ensuring public health and safety across the country.
