Victor Anichebe Leads Shock Consortium Bid for Gateshead FC

Date:

Former Super Eagles, Everton, and Sunderland striker Victor Anichebe has been linked with a shock takeover bid for National League club Gateshead.

According to reports from the Chronicle, Anichebe, 36, is leading a consortium interested in purchasing the club, which has been fan-owned since 2019 following financial irregularities that led to its relegation to the sixth tier. Under manager Mike Williamson, Gateshead has since regained National League status and won the FA Trophy.

Speculation over the potential takeover gained traction after Yeovil Town manager Mark Cooper claimed that an unknown individual had brokered a deal with his player, Frank Nouble, to join Gateshead—despite not officially owning the club. Cooper suggested the situation unsettled Nouble before the move ultimately collapsed.

Anichebe, who scored 38 goals across spells with Everton, West Brom, and Sunderland, has been spotted attending matches at Gateshead International Stadium, further fueling rumors. However, the club has remained silent, responding with a “no comment” when asked about the reported takeover.

As discussions continue behind the scenes, Gateshead fans await official confirmation on whether Anichebe’s consortium will assume control of the club.
