Lawmakers Demand Answers Over Delay in Conditional Cash Transfer Disbursement

Date:

The House of Representatives has initiated an investigation into the delay in disbursing the Federal Government’s conditional cash transfer to selected beneficiaries under the Household Uplifting Programme.

During a plenary session on Wednesday, presided over by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, lawmakers resolved to set up an ad-hoc committee to probe the issue and report back within four weeks.

The resolution followed a motion by Abbas Adigun, who represents Ibadan North-East/Ibadan South-East Federal Constituency in Oyo State. Adigun raised concerns about the unexplained delay, which has left many vulnerable Nigerians without the much-needed financial support.

The Household Uplifting Programme—part of the Federal Government’s Social Safety Nets Programme launched in partnership with the World Bank in 2016—was designed to provide financial assistance to poor and vulnerable households across the country.

Adigun explained that in August 2024, nominees for the programme were informed that they would receive ₦50,000 per month for three months. Their details were submitted online to the National Cash Transfer Office, and payments were to be made directly into their bank accounts.

“While some nominees received payment months after submitting their details, many others have yet to receive any funds,” Adigun stated, expressing frustration over the National Cash Transfer Office’s lack of response.

The House’s decision to investigate aims to ensure transparency and efficiency in the programme’s implementation and provide relief to the affected beneficiaries as soon as possible.
