‘I Am Sorry’ – Corps Member Who Criticized Lagos, Tinubu Issues Apology

Date:

A National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Ushie Uguamaye, also known as Raye, has publicly apologized after her viral video criticizing Lagos and the Nigerian government sparked widespread debate.

In an Instagram post on Monday, Raye expressed regret over her choice of words, acknowledging that her remarks may have offended Lagos residents. She clarified that her intention was not to insult anyone but to share her honest observations as a visitor.

“I want to first of all state that I am sorry to the people who were born and raised in Lagos State if you feel offended by what I said. I am sorry,” she wrote.

Her viral comment referring to Lagos as a “smelling state” was part of a broader initiative—a 30-day rant challenge aimed at drawing attention to Nigeria’s economic hardships. She had planned to post 20 videos discussing various societal issues but was surprised that her first video alone gained massive traction.

Raye also used the opportunity to highlight the financial struggles of young Nigerians, lamenting that despite working over 45 hours a week, many—including herself—still struggle to afford basic leisure activities.

“The complaints I made are valid regardless of whatever ‘lifestyle’ you think I am living. I work 45+ hours a week and should be able to afford hanging out with my friends every weekend. However, I can’t. But how many of us can actually afford to hang out with our friends?” she asked.

Her video, which also criticized President Bola Tinubu’s leadership and the high cost of living, sparked mixed reactions. While some Nigerians resonated with her frustrations, others took offense at her remarks about Lagos.

Despite the backlash, Raye urged Nigerians to stay focused on demanding better living conditions rather than getting distracted by social media controversies.

“I encourage all of us to ask for what we believe we deserve. If we stay committed to asking for better, we will get better,” she added.

Her viral video continues to generate discussions across social media, with activists and concerned citizens debating freedom of expression and the economic struggles faced by many Nigerians.
