Justice Enebeli Wanted: Rivers Lawmakers Order Arrest Over Election Dispute

Date:

The Rivers State House of Assembly has issued an arrest warrant for Justice Adolphus Enebeli (Rtd), Chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, after he failed to appear before the lawmakers within a 72-hour ultimatum.

The Assembly, led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, had summoned Enebeli to answer questions regarding the annulled local government elections held on October 5, 2024. The Supreme Court had voided the elections due to irregularities and ordered a fresh poll to be conducted on August 9, 2025.

Enebeli’s refusal to honor the Assembly’s invitation led to the lawmakers taking the unprecedented step of ordering his arrest.

Meanwhile, tensions continue to rise in the state’s political landscape. Governor Siminalayi Fubara has invited Assembly members for a dialogue on implementing the Supreme Court’s ruling. Additionally, the Supreme Court has barred federal financial institutions from disbursing funds to Rivers State until they comply with court orders, adding further uncertainty to the crisis.

The situation remains fluid, with political observers closely watching how the standoff between the state legislature and the electoral commission will unfold.
