Chelsea Edge Leicester to Go Fourth as Spurs Hold Bournemouth

Date:

Chelsea moved into the Premier League’s top four with a narrow 1-0 victory over struggling Leicester City, while Tottenham Hotspur staged a dramatic fightback to earn a 2-2 draw against Bournemouth on Sunday.

Marc Cucurella’s stunning long-range strike in the second half at Stamford Bridge secured all three points for Chelsea, lifting them above Manchester City into fourth place. The Blues are now two points ahead of City in the race for a Champions League spot, though their performance against second-bottom Leicester left much to be desired.

Enzo Maresca’s side, who have won just four of their last 12 league games, will need to improve if they hope to maintain their position. Chelsea had an early chance to take the lead when Jadon Sancho won a penalty, but Cole Palmer’s spot-kick was saved by Mads Hermansen – marking the England forward’s first career penalty miss.

Leicester, led by Ruud van Nistelrooy, are now in deep relegation trouble, sitting six points from safety after suffering their fifth consecutive league defeat.

At the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Spurs avoided another embarrassing loss despite falling two goals behind against Bournemouth. Marcus Tavernier put the visitors ahead in the 42nd minute before Evanilson doubled their lead in the 65th.

However, Pape Sarr sparked Tottenham’s comeback just two minutes later with a fluke cross that sailed into the net. Then, in the 84th minute, Kepa Arrizabalaga fouled Son Heung-min, allowing the South Korean to convert from the penalty spot and salvage a point.

With the draw, Tottenham remain 13th, while Bournemouth missed a golden opportunity to close the gap on the top-four challengers.

Meanwhile, Arsenal take on Manchester United later on Sunday, hoping to cut Liverpool’s commanding lead at the top of the table.
