Falana Slams N200m Lawsuit Against Ogun Monarch Over Viral Assault Video

Date:

Renowned human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, has filed a N200 million lawsuit against Oba Semiu Ogunjobi, the Olorile of Orile Ifo, Ogun State, over the alleged assault of 73-year-old Elder Areola Abraham Love.

The lawsuit, dated March 7, 2025, was submitted to the Ogun State High Court, Ota, seeking to enforce the victim’s constitutional rights to dignity, freedom of movement, and life.

The legal action follows a viral video from February, which showed Elder Love kneeling beside a road while being assaulted by Oba Ogunjobi and others. The disturbing footage sparked public outrage, leading to the monarch’s six-month suspension by the Ogun State Government and his arraignment for assault.

Falana’s suit argues that the January 21, 2025, attack was a violation of fundamental human rights, as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

The legal demands include:

  • A court declaration that the beating, kicking, and public humiliation of Elder Love violated his right to life and dignity.
  • N200 million in damages for the physical and psychological harm suffered.
  • A public apology published in The Punch, Vanguard, and Nigerian Tribune.

The case highlights growing concerns about abuse of power by traditional rulers and the importance of legal action in protecting citizens’ rights.
