The National Examinations Council (NECO) has blacklisted 14 examination centres across Ogun and Oyo states for involvement in exam malpractice during the 2024 Senior School Certificate Examination (External). The centres were implicated in various forms of malpractice across nine subjects.
NECO Registrar, Prof. Dantani Wushishi, disclosed the action on Friday, February 14, 2025, during a media briefing at the Council’s headquarters in Minna, Niger State. Ten of the blacklisted centres are located in Ogun State, while the remaining four are in Oyo State. Wushishi confirmed that the names of the affected centres and supervisors will be forwarded to other examination bodies, including JAMB and WAEC, for further sanctions.
The Registrar also highlighted that the number of candidates involved in malpractice had decreased by 27.7% compared to 2023. This year, 6,169 candidates were caught for various forms of malpractice, down from 8,518 last year. Wushishi revealed that seven supervisors from different states, including Oyo, Ogun, Lagos, Cross River, and Ebonyi, had been recommended for blacklisting due to their involvement in aiding malpractice, poor supervision, and lateness.
In total, 86,067 candidates, consisting of 44,988 males and 41,079 females, registered for the 2024 examination, with 84,799 candidates actually sitting for the exam. A significant number of candidates performed well, with 62,929 (75.62%) achieving credits in English Language and 77,988 (93.94%) passing Mathematics with five credits or more. Additionally, 57,114 candidates, representing 63.35%, secured five credits and above, including English Language and Mathematics, while 70,711 (83.39%) achieved five credits or more, irrespective of these subjects.
This announcement comes as NECO continues to uphold the integrity of its examinations and take decisive action against malpractice, reflecting a commitment to improving educational standards in Nigeria.
