Nigeria has lost one of its most prominent elder statesmen and nationalists, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, who passed away peacefully on Friday morning at his Lekki residence in Lagos at the age of 96.
A statement released by the Adebanjo family confirmed his death, describing him as a selfless leader who dedicated his life to the service of God, the nation, and humanity.
“With a heart full of gratitude for a selfless life spent in the service of God, the nation, and humanity, we announce the passing on of our beloved patriarch, Chief Samuel Ayodele Adebanjo. He died peacefully this morning, Friday, February 14, 2025, at his Lekki, Lagos, home at the age of 96,” the family said.
Pa Adebanjo was a renowned nationalist, lawyer, politician, and advocate for true federalism. He served as the former organising secretary of the Action Group and was the national leader of Afenifere, a Yoruba socio-political group known for its advocacy for democracy and federalism in Nigeria.
He is survived by his 94-year-old wife, Chief Christy Ayo-Adebanjo, as well as children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
The family expressed pride in his lifelong commitment to justice, equity, and the fight for an independent and progressive Nigeria. “His belief and struggle for a truly independent and progressive Nigeria was total, and this he fought for until he breathed his last breath,” the statement added.
Plans for a befitting funeral are underway, with details to be announced in due course. The family has opened condolence registers at his Lagos residence at 8 Ayo Adebanjo Close, Lekki Phase 1, and his country home in Isanya Ogbo, near Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.
Pa Ayo Adebanjo leaves behind a legacy of unwavering activism, democratic principles, and an enduring belief in a united, equitable Nigeria. His contributions to Nigeria’s political development and his role in shaping its democratic landscape will be remembered for generations to come.
