Reigning Nigerian Women’s Football League champions, Edo Queens, are guaranteed $300,000 after they defiled the odds on Saturday knocking out CAF Women’s Champions League champions Mamelodi Sundowns of the competition.
They became the second Nigerian team to qualify for the CAF Women’s Champions League semi-finals after Bayelsa Queens, which achieved this feat in the second edition of the tournament in 2022.
Edo Queens came from a goal down to record a hard-fought 2-1 win over the South African side in Saturday’s quarter-final.
Melinda Kgadiete gave the Mamelodi Sundowns the lead in the 24th minute but two goals in additional time from Emem Essien in the 95th and another from Mary Mamudu 98th to reach the last four of the competition.
Essien won the Woman of the Match award for her outstanding performance.
Edo Queens, who are making their debut in the competition also topped Group B with 7 points.
They will face DR Congo’s TP Mazembe in the semi-final on Tuesday.
Edo Queens began their campaign with an impressive 3-0 win over Central Bank of Ethiopia Ladies but faltered in their second match, settling for a draw against Egypt’s Masar.
This left their group wide open heading into the final round of matches.
With the victory, Queens ended their campaign as group winners while Masar who defeated CBE 2-0 in the other group game also clinched the remaining semi-final spot after finishing second.
