Lagos Lawmakers Demand Action on Abandoned Roads, Urge Sanwo-Olu to Resume Projects

Date:

Lagos State lawmakers have called on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to prioritize the completion of abandoned road projects, including the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Road in Igbogbo Bayeku, Ikorodu, which has been left in a deplorable state since 2017.

The motion, raised by Hon. Aro Moshood (Ikorodu 2), was brought under ‘Matter of Urgent Importance’ during Thursday’s plenary session. Moshood urged the governor to direct contractors to resume work immediately and for government agencies to provide 60% of the required funding to contractors while ensuring their security for prompt project completion.

“The road has been left in a deplorable state since 2017. What was meant to bring relief to the people has now become a source of distress, posing serious security and socio-economic challenges,” Moshood said. He emphasized the importance of completing the project to alleviate the difficulties faced by residents and improve security in the area, which has become prone to robberies due to the unfinished roadworks.

Supporting the motion, Hon. Sa’ad Olumo (Ajeromi-Ifelodun 1) highlighted that the state government had allocated sufficient funds for road projects, despite contractors citing rising material costs as an obstacle to progress.

Deputy Majority Leader, Adedamola Richard Kasunmu (Ikeja 2), also stressed that the issue extended beyond Ikorodu. “This is not just an Ikorodu problem; it is happening across the state. We need to summon all relevant authorities, including the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, to provide explanations for these abandoned roads,” he said.

To address the situation, Hon. Abiodun Tobun proposed enacting a law that would mandate all administrations to complete projects initiated by their predecessors in order to prevent the recurrence of unfinished works. Several other lawmakers, including Hon. Ganiyu Okanlawon (Kosofe I), voiced concerns over contractors who fail to deliver, stressing the need for accountability and stricter measures.

In response, Rt. Hon. Lasbat Meranda directed all lawmakers to compile lists of abandoned roads in their constituencies for submission to the appropriate ministry for immediate action.

The House resolved to take swift action on the matter, urging Governor Sanwo-Olu to ensure the completion of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Road and other abandoned road projects across Lagos State.
