The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has refuted widespread rumors about the re-establishment of the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), declaring that the unit remains permanently dissolved.
In a statement titled “Disclaimer: SARS Remains Dissolved” issued in Abuja on Monday, Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, clarified that there are no plans to bring back the controversial unit, which was officially disbanded on October 11, 2020, following nationwide protests against police brutality.
“The Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) is not back in operation. The recent information regarding SARS reformation and rules of engagement should be treated with caution,” Adejobi stated.
He advised the public to rely on verified information from official police channels to avoid the spread of falsehoods. “To ensure receiving accurate and reliable updates, citizens are encouraged to follow the Nigeria Police Force’s official social media accounts: @PoliceNG on X, @ngpolice on Facebook, and @nigeriapoliceforce on Instagram,” he added.
Adejobi further underscored the importance of public vigilance and awareness in staying informed. “Your safety and awareness are paramount; stay informed and vigilant,” he said.
The statement comes amid growing public concern and speculation regarding reports of a possible SARS comeback under new guidelines. The police’s response aims to reassure citizens that no such plans exist and to maintain transparency in law enforcement operations.
SARS was disbanded in 2020 after #EndSARS protests, which saw thousands of Nigerians take to the streets demanding police reform and accountability.
