The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has confirmed that a 10-year-old boy, Bright Okon James, is currently in its custody over allegations of defilement of a 3-year-old girl.
In a press release on Saturday, the command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, stated that the minor was taken into custody after evidence, including a medical report, substantiated the allegation. According to John, the suspect voluntarily admitted to the offence without any coercion.
Contrary to viral reports alleging illegal detention and trial by ordeal, the police insisted that the investigation is being conducted within the confines of the law. The PPRO clarified that the boy would be charged to court on Monday, February 10, 2025, following the conclusion of preliminary investigations.
“The attention of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command has been drawn to a viral report alleging the illegal detention of a 10-year-old boy, Bright Okon James. The command remains committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that justice is served in line with due process,” the statement read.
The command urged the public to avoid spreading misinformation and allow the legal process to take its course. It emphasized that trial by ordeal is a criminal act under Nigerian law and assured the public that the case would be handled transparently and fairly.
The case has sparked public attention, with many calling for a thorough investigation while maintaining sensitivity to the rights of all parties involved.
