The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has publicly denied any role in the arrest of TikToker Olumide Ogunsanwo, popularly known as ‘SeaKing,’ who was rearrested for allegedly cyberbullying him.
During the church’s monthly Holy Ghost Service at Redemption City, Ogun State, on Friday, Adeboye addressed the issue, calling for SeaKing’s immediate release. A video of the sermon began trending on Saturday, where Adeboye clarified that he had no involvement in the arrest and expressed concern over the situation.
“I heard that there is someone who lambasted me thoroughly,” Adeboye said during the sermon. “What is my offence? Because I asked my people to fast for 100 days. I didn’t ask him. I didn’t even ask anyone who is not a member of the Redeemed Christian Church of God to fast. Some people got so angry and went to arrest the fellow. Release him; he’s fulfilling prophecy.”
SeaKing’s arrest has sparked public debate and concern among rights activists and social media users. Rights activist Omoyele Sowore, who visited SeaKing in police custody in Abuja, reported that the arrest was allegedly based on a petition submitted by one Paul James Adama on behalf of a Christian group said to be affiliated with the police.
Sowore and a team of lawyers who met with SeaKing confirmed that the petition was reportedly submitted in Pastor Adeboye’s name, though the cleric has now denied any connection to it.
Adeboye’s call for SeaKing’s release has been widely interpreted as a plea for compassion and tolerance. His statement has eased tensions in the ongoing debate about free speech and criticism of public figures, particularly religious leaders.
As the story continues to develop, it remains to be seen whether SeaKing will be released, following Adeboye’s public disavowal of any involvement in his arrest. Rights activists and SeaKing’s supporters are hopeful for a swift resolution.
