In a bid to alleviate the economic struggles faced by many Nigerians, the Rafeeqee Foundation has successfully empowered over 1,000 individuals and covered the medical expenses for several others through its Zakat initiative. This effort spans over 10 states in Nigeria, reflecting the foundation’s commitment to providing sustainable support to low-income earners.
Mrs. Monsurat Ayantola, Project Execution Lead for the Rafeeqee Foundation, explained that the Zakat initiative, specifically the Zakaatul Maal empowerment project, focuses on long-term development, giving the underprivileged a chance to improve their living conditions and break the cycle of poverty. “Empowering low-income individuals is a cornerstone of our mission,” Ayantola said. “Our careful selection process ensures that those who receive help meet the Zakat criteria as prescribed by Sharia law.”
Dr. Mutiat Muhammad, the Director of Social Services at the foundation, emphasized the importance of partnerships within the community to further the foundation’s impact. “Our sole aim is to break the cycles of poverty, foster self-reliance, strengthen community development, and inspire positive change,” she said.
Despite the economic challenges in Nigeria, which have affected the livelihoods of many, the foundation continues to focus on establishing a robust support system. In 2024 alone, over 100 individuals were empowered, and the foundation’s work is guided by Islamic values, as exemplified by the Prophet Muhammad and his companions.
Dr. Muhammad called on Nigerians to join in the foundation’s efforts to uplift lives and transform communities. “Zakat plays a vital role in achieving a balanced society,” she said, stressing the foundation’s commitment to accountability and transparency. Additionally, the Rafeeqee Foundation provides access to a team of expert scholars who assist with zakat calculations and offer guidance on eligible assets.
The foundation’s ongoing efforts reflect a deep commitment to community development, and with continued support, it aims to make a lasting impact on Nigeria’s most vulnerable populations.
