Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso has described Victor Boniface’s collapsed move to Al-Nassr as “a bit strange,” but praised the Nigerian striker’s resilience and mentality following his impressive return from injury.
Boniface, who joined Leverkusen from Union Saint-Gilloise in the summer of 2023, has been in sensational form, scoring 30 goals and providing 11 assists in 50 appearances across all competitions.
His exceptional performances drew the attention of Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr, with reports suggesting that a deal had been agreed between the clubs.
However, the move fell through, with Al-Nassr instead opting to sign Jhon Duran from Aston Villa.
Despite the transfer setback, Boniface’s response to the situation has been nothing short of remarkable.
The Nigerian striker made a goalscoring return from a two-month injury layoff, netting the opener in Leverkusen’s 3-1 victory over Hoffenheim.
Alonso acknowledged the awkwardness of Boniface’s transfer saga but harped on the importance of the player’s mentality.
“It was an important moment for him after his injury,” Alonso told Bild, for whom Boniface bagged 21 goals and 10 assists in 34 matches across all competitions in 2023/24 as Leverkusen won a league-and-cup double and reached the Europa League final.
“The situation last week was a bit strange, uncomfortable. It was important that Boni felt important again.
He should feel the love of the fans—that’s good for his head.”
Alonso’s words reflect his admiration for Boniface’s ability to overcome a difficult period and reaffirm his commitment to the club.
