The Federal Government and the Bayelsa State government are finalizing plans for the establishment of a $3 billion deep seaport in Agge, Ekeremor Local Government Area, Bayelsa State. The ambitious Public Private Partnership (PPP) project aims to boost Nigeria’s maritime infrastructure, ease port congestion, and create significant economic opportunities for the region.
According to the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, a Project Delivery Team is currently in Bayelsa to work closely with state officials to expedite preparations for the seaport’s commencement. The project is expected to turn Bayelsa into a major transport hub, serving the northern and southeastern parts of the country.
Once completed, the Agge deep seaport will attract multi-billion-dollar investments, create thousands of jobs, and promote socio-economic activities in the region. Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State had earlier sought federal support for the project, highlighting the state’s vast blue economy potential.
The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, emphasized the government’s commitment to improving port infrastructure and connectivity. “We are determined to close the maritime infrastructure gap by facilitating the development of critical projects like the Agge seaport,” Oyetola said.
The project will be executed under a PPP model to ensure sustainable development and attract foreign direct investment. Sources revealed that the Ministry is actively engaging private investors to fund and develop critical maritime infrastructure across the country.
The Agge deep seaport is part of a broader plan to establish similar projects in other parts of the country. The government believes these initiatives will position Nigeria as a maritime leader in Africa.
With the successful implementation of the Agge deep seaport, Bayelsa State is set to become a strategic hub for maritime operations, reducing the reliance on Lagos ports and opening new economic corridors for the South-South region.
Governor Diri expressed optimism about the project, noting that it will unlock the state’s maritime potential and drive development in the region. The Federal Government’s collaboration with Bayelsa underscores its commitment to fostering economic growth through critical infrastructure development.
The project is expected to significantly reduce congestion at Lagos ports and provide new trade opportunities for businesses in Bayelsa and beyond.
