2025 AFCON qualifier: Nigeria face desperate Benin for AFCON ticket

Date:

The final two rounds matches for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco will determine the two qualifiers from an open Group D with Nigeria, Benin and Rwanda the main contenders.

The top two teams will qualify for the 2025 AFCON.

After four rounds of matches, Nigeria top Group D with 10 points, Benin are second on six points, while Rwanda have five points.

Libya are bottom of the standings with a solitary point and have been eliminated.

The Eagles need at least a draw with Benin today to seal qualification to next year’s AFCON.

The Cheetahs of Benin, on the other hand, are hard-pressed to win this tie to stay clear of nearest rivals Rwanda, who will be home to Libya.

A loss or a draw for Benin today could well see Rwanda leap frog into second place should they beat Libya in Kigali.

Benin final game of the qualifying series will be a tricky tie away in Libya, while Rwanda visit Uyo next Monday to battle leaders Nigeria.

Benin have made steady progress under former Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr so much so that they recorded a famous 2-1 win over Nigeria in a 2026 World Cup qualifying match in June.

This feat will most certainly boost their confidence going into today’s clash even though the Super Eagles have since avenged this upset with a 3-0 spanking of the Cheetahs in Uyo in a 2025 AFCON qualifier in September.

Qualification for both Benin and Rwanda may well be only decided on the final day of qualifiers next Monday.
