Yobo Confident Super Eagles Can Win AFCON 2025

Date:

Former Super Eagles captain, Joseph Yobo, is confident that Nigeria can secure a fourth Africa Cup of Nations title when the 35th edition takes place in Morocco later this year.

The tournament will run from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026. Nigeria has been drawn in Group C alongside Tunisia, Uganda, and Tanzania.

Speaking at the draw ceremony in Rabat on Monday, Yobo expressed optimism about the team’s chances, urging them to improve on their runner-up finish in the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast.

“We have a very good team that we can build on our last performance in Ivory Coast,” Yobo said.

“I think we will try to do one better than we did last edition.”

Yobo, who captained Nigeria to their third AFCON title in 2013, acknowledged the challenge of ending a 12-year drought since the Eagles’ last championship victory.

“The last time we won it was in 2013. It’s 12 years since we last won it,” he said.

With key players like Victor Osimhen, Alex Iwobi, Moses Simon, Wilfred Ndidi, and Samuel Chukwueze, Yobo believes the current squad is well-equipped to challenge for the title.

“When you have a good team and the players improving, we have the best set of players in this generation.

“So it’s not going to be easy, but I believe qualifying from the group won’t be a problem.”

Yobo also highlighted the presence of the reigning African Player of the Year, Ademola Lookman, as a boost for the squad.

As the 2025 tournament approaches, all eyes will be on the Super Eagles to see if they can live up to Yobo’s optimistic predictions and secure Nigeria’s fourth AFCON trophy.
