A festival in Ile-Ife, Osun State, turned violent on January 20, 2025, when suspected attackers disrupted the Obatala Festival, leaving six Isese worshippers injured. The attack, reportedly involving stone-throwing, occurred as the worshippers processed through the Idio Market and More Area.
Speaking with SaharaReporters, Oba Alamo Obatala, a prominent traditional worshipper, claimed that Muslims were behind the attack, citing similar incidents and threats dating back to 2022. Among those injured was an elderly woman, whose head was severely bloodied during the chaos.
Oba Alamo explained that the worshippers had issued public notices via radio and palace guards for four days leading up to the event, warning residents to avoid the procession route. Despite these precautions, the group was met with violence.
“My car’s windscreen was shattered, and several people were injured. Stones were thrown from nearby houses and trees as we passed the More Area,” Oba Alamo said. He added that prior threats from Islamic extremists in Ile-Ife have been ongoing since 2022, alleging that Muslims have actively opposed the Isese rites.
While videos and images confirmed injuries sustained by worshippers, a prominent Yoruba blogger and Muslim community member, Ojulowo Omo Yoruba TV, disputed the allegations. He argued there is no evidence linking the attack to Muslims.
“We’ve investigated and found no evidence to prove Muslims were involved in the attack. It is wrong to spread unverified claims that tarnish the reputation of any religion,” he said, urging for calm and fact-based reporting to avoid escalating tensions.
Efforts to contact the Osun State Police Command for an official statement were unsuccessful.
The incident highlights growing religious tensions in the region, with calls from both sides to maintain peace and respect for cultural practices.
