Seven Countries back Nigeria to host UNESCO MIL Institute

Date:

Nigeria has gained support from seven countries and the commitment of 20 others to host the forthcoming UNESCO Category II Media and Information Literacy Institute.

The minister of information, Mohammed Idris, revealed this development while addressing UNESCO delegates in Abuja, during their assessment of Nigeria’s readiness to host the institute at the National Open University of Nigeria.

Idris expressed confidence that Nigeria would secure the hosting rights at the next UNESCO Board meeting.

“Already, we have the support of about seven sister nations,” Idris said.

“About 20 countries have also indicated their desire to support Nigeria.

“At the next UNESCO Board meeting, we are confident Nigeria will secure the hosting right for the MIL Institute.”

The institute, he explained, would be a global hub to combat misinformation, disinformation, and fake news, benefiting not only Nigeria but Africa and the world as a whole.

He said that the initiative would showcase Nigeria’s expertise and commitment to media literacy on a global scale.

The project, approved by President Bola Tinubu, has already secured funding, and the collaboration between the Federal Ministry of Education and various stakeholders is central to its success.

Idris also noted that addressing fake news does not mean restricting press freedom, but rather ensuring that freedom comes with responsibility.

He noted, “Freedom ends where another’s rights begin.”

For his part, Nelson Kolliesuah, project manager of Data-Pop Alliance, an independent verification firm engaged by UNESCO, praised Nigeria’s preparations.

He confirmed that the necessary infrastructure and governance align with global standards and Nigeria’s educational system, reinforcing confidence in Nigeria’s readiness.

Once approved, the institute is expected to play a vital role in fostering media literacy and addressing global challenges posed by disinformation.

The Category 2 Centres under the auspices of UNESCO that contribute to the implementation of programs within the Communication and Information Sector play a significant role in advancing global knowledge and fostering inclusive societies.
