Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has reaffirmed his commitment to positioning Lagos as a global hub for the African diaspora, focusing on cultural exchange and strengthening global ties with people of African descent.
Sanwo-Olu made this declaration on Monday during a courtesy visit from the African Ancestry Delegation, which was led by Dr. Gina Paige, Co-Founder of African Ancestry, and Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM). The Governor highlighted the importance of preserving and celebrating African heritage, describing it as a key aspect of identity and unity.
Speaking at the meeting, Governor Sanwo-Olu expressed his belief that the rich and diverse history of Lagos and Nigeria is a cornerstone of their identity. “Our rich and diverse history is crucial to our identity as Nigerians and Africans. Their commitment to connecting people of African descent with their roots is commendable and vital in fostering a deeper understanding of our shared heritage,” he remarked.
He also outlined his vision for Lagos as a central hub for the African diaspora, emphasizing the city’s unique position as a cultural melting pot and a natural host for initiatives that promote African heritage.
Discussions during the meeting revolved around enhancing Lagos’ role in cultural tourism and creating opportunities to celebrate African heritage globally. Dr. Gina Paige praised the governor’s initiatives and expressed her enthusiasm about the collaboration. “Lagos holds a special place as a melting pot of African heritage, and we are excited about the opportunities to work together in celebrating this identity,” she said.
Abike Dabiri-Erewa also commended Lagos’ leadership in diaspora engagement, calling the meeting a crucial step towards reconnecting the African diaspora with their roots. She noted, “Lagos is setting the standard for cultural exchange, and this partnership will inspire Africans globally to embrace their heritage.”
As Governor Sanwo-Olu continues to chart a course for Lagos as a key cultural center, the collaboration with the African Ancestry Delegation and NIDCOM marks a significant milestone in the city’s quest to deepen its cultural ties with the African diaspora and celebrate its rich heritage on the global stage.
