Combined ground and air troops under Operation Fansan Yanma have intensified their campaign against the notorious bandit leader Bello Turji, dismantling key hideouts in Zamfara State. The military offensive, which targeted Fakai in Shinkafi Local Government Area, marks a significant escalation in efforts to neutralize Turji’s network.
Recent strikes also eliminated bandit camps in Sabon Birni Local Government Area, including Zangon Dan Gwandi, Zangon Tsaika, and Zangon Kagara. A school reportedly used by Turji to store food and weapons was destroyed to cut off his supplies.
Intelligence sources confirmed significant losses for Turji’s group during the operation, including the death of his son and numerous fighters. “Turji was heard in panic, calling for reinforcements from seven other bandit leaders, none of whom responded,” an intelligence officer revealed. High-profile associates and lieutenants were also neutralized, and several injured fighters fled to Mangwarorin Gebe with stolen livestock and valuables.
The operation, described as one of the most decisive in recent times, was led by elite special forces with support from the Navy’s Special Boat Service and the Nigerian Air Force. Strategic positioning along key escape routes has trapped Turji’s forces, with credible reports indicating he was last sighted at Zangon Gebe, surrounded by heavily armed fighters.
The success of the operation has been attributed to proactive intelligence sharing and early warning systems, which enabled the evacuation of civilians from high-risk areas, minimizing collateral damage. Precision airstrikes by the Nigerian Air Force have dismantled critical hideouts, significantly undermining Turji’s operational capacity.
Military officials emphasized their commitment to dismantling bandit networks in Zamfara and beyond. “This is a sustained campaign to end the impunity of notorious bandits and ensure lasting peace in affected areas,” a source from the Theatre Command stated.
The ongoing offensive is among the most strategic efforts in recent years, signaling a decisive move to eliminate the threat posed by Bello Turji and his associates.
