The Lagos State Government has shut down Smiley Kids Montessori in Sangotedo following a tragic swimming pool accident that claimed the life of a two-year-old girl, Rapheala Ogbodo, on Wednesday, January 15, 2025. The incident occurred at the school premises located in Heritage Place Estate.
Officials from the Lagos State Safety Commission and the Office of Education Quality Assurance, Ministry of Education, have visited the scene to conduct a preliminary investigation and uncover the root cause of the incident. The school has been sealed off pending the outcome of the investigation.
In a statement, Mr. Lanre Mojola, the Director-General of the Lagos State Safety Commission, reiterated the importance of strict adherence to safety regulations by all school owners and caregivers. “This unfortunate incident highlights the need for unwavering commitment to safety protocols in educational institutions,” Mojola said, adding that the State Government is determined to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
The Lagos State Government expressed its heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased, assuring the public that additional information would be provided upon the conclusion of the investigation.
