Chelsea midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka, who has struggled for game time this season, is reportedly expected to leave the club this month, with Borussia Dortmund entering the race for his signature.
The 21-year-old, who joined Chelsea from Aston Villa in a £20 million deal in 2022, has seen limited action this season, with only five appearances across the Carabao Cup and Conference League. His absence from Chelsea’s 5-0 win over Morecambe and continued exclusion from the Premier League matchday squads have fueled speculation about his future at Stamford Bridge.
German club Borussia Dortmund are among the clubs reportedly interested in the England youth international, with head coach Nuri Sahin said to be a big admirer of Chukwuemeka. Dortmund, looking to bolster their midfield in the January transfer window, are reportedly considering a loan move for the Chelsea player.
Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has hinted that a move away from the club might be in the best interest of Chukwuemeka, given the intense competition for places in Chelsea’s midfield. Speaking before the Morecambe match, Maresca acknowledged the player’s potential but stressed the difficulty of securing regular minutes at Chelsea due to the depth in midfield.
“Carney is a good player, but we have so many midfield players that he will struggle to get minutes with us,” Maresca said. “Probably for him, the best solution is to go and get minutes elsewhere.”
Although Maresca confirmed that Chelsea had not yet received an official approach from Dortmund, the midfielder’s departure seems imminent as the club looks to make room for other key players and potentially pursue defensive reinforcements in the window.
Chukwuemeka’s next destination remains uncertain, but with Borussia Dortmund showing interest, a move to the Bundesliga could provide the midfielder with the opportunity for more regular playing time and career progression.
