Uzodinma Appeals for Peace in Imo, Vows Justice for Assassinated APC Leaders

Date:

The Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodinma, has made a heartfelt appeal to the gunmen responsible for insecurity in some parts of the state, urging them to surrender and lay down their arms. Speaking at the funeral of the slain former Imo APC Woman Leader for Orlu Zone, Jenny Rachael Okonkwo, the governor called on those still hiding in the bushes to join society and contribute positively to the state’s progress. He promised that the government would provide support to anyone willing to engage in business or trade to better themselves.

Governor Uzodinma made the call during the funeral ceremony held at the country home of the late APC leader in Ogberuru, Orlu Local Government Area, where he also condemned the tragic circumstances surrounding her assassination. Okonkwo, a dedicated member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), was murdered by suspected hoodlums in 2022. Her body was found in a bush, alongside four other women.

Describing Okonkwo as a committed and passionate party member, Uzodinma expressed grief over the loss, emphasizing that the political violence that led to her death was senseless. “She was one of the best organizers and mobilizers, not only in Orlu Local Government but in Imo State in general,” he said. “She worked, suffered, and served the party and the government, and she was assassinated because of her commitment.”

To support the families of the deceased, the governor approved a financial compensation of N10 million for each family. He also assured the families that the state government would provide employment opportunities for any of their children who were eligible or offer vocational training for those willing to learn a trade.

The governor also hinted that political violence in the region, including the orchestrated killings, was fueled by unscrupulous politicians who sought to create chaos for political gain. However, he expressed confidence that, with God’s help, the people of Orlu were beginning to understand that those behind these acts did not have the state’s best interest at heart.

In his emotional address, Uzodinma reiterated his condemnation of political killings and emphasized the need for unity and resilience within the APC. “What one sows is what one will reap,” he said, urging members to remain committed to the party. “At the end of the day, you will answer to God.”

He extended his condolences to the family of the deceased and the APC members across the state, particularly those in Camp Hope, for their unwavering efforts in strengthening the party’s unity.
