Thousands of residents in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) will experience a two-week blackout starting Monday, January 6, as the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) has announced a power supply disruption. This will affect several areas in the capital city due to critical infrastructure work being carried out by the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA).
The power outage is a result of the relocation of the 33KV DC Airport Feeder and 132KV Kukwaba-Apo Transmission Line Towers along the Outer Southern Expressway, a project aimed at enhancing the region’s electricity infrastructure. The operation, which will last from January 6 to 21, will require significant adjustments to the power grid.
The AEDC has provided a detailed list of affected areas, including prominent locations such as Lugbe, Airport Road, Kapwa, NNPC, Games Village, National Stadium, Eye Clinic, Christ Embassy Church, and several government buildings like the EFCC Headquarters and the Coca-Cola facility. Other regions like Apo, Gudu, Gbazango, Kubwa, Bwari, Jahi, and Karu will also be impacted.
In its official statement, AEDC apologised to the affected residents and urged them to make necessary preparations during the scheduled outage. The company acknowledged the inconvenience caused and assured residents that the disruption was essential for improving the long-term reliability of the city’s power supply.
AEDC also emphasized that the relocation work would ultimately contribute to a more stable and efficient electricity network across the Federal Capital Territory once completed.
