13 Prisoners Escape After Drunken Officer Unlocks Cells on New Year’s Eve

Date:

A Zambian police officer has been arrested for allegedly releasing 13 detainees to celebrate New Year’s Eve after consuming alcohol, authorities have confirmed. The incident occurred at a detention facility near Kanyama in southern Zambia, where the suspects were held on charges including assault, affray, and theft.

Detective Inspector Titus Phiri reportedly “forcibly seized cell keys” early Tuesday morning while intoxicated, according to a statement from the Zambia Police Service. Phiri then unlocked both male and female cells, instructing the detainees to leave, declaring them “free to cross over into the New Year.”

Following the unauthorized release, a manhunt has been launched to recapture the escaped prisoners, who remain at large.

In its statement, the Zambia Police Service reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining law and order, pledging decisive action against officers who abuse their authority or violate the law.

“The Zambia Police Service assures the public that such incidents will not be tolerated and measures are in place to prevent a recurrence,” the statement concluded.

The bizarre incident has sparked widespread debate in Zambia, with many calling for stricter oversight of law enforcement officials. Meanwhile, efforts to track down the escaped detainees are ongoing.
