Ogun State to Build New Boxing Ring for Anthony Joshua

Date:

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has officially appointed two-time world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua as the state’s Sports Ambassador. The announcement came during a meeting on Monday, where the Governor shared plans for further sports development in Ogun State, including new initiatives that will highlight the state’s growing reputation in athletics and sports.

Governor Abiodun disclosed that Joshua, a global sports icon, would light the torch for the rescheduled Gateway Games National Sports Festival, now set for May 2024. The Governor emphasized Joshua’s role in inspiring the next generation of athletes, stating that his involvement would elevate the event’s profile and attract international attention.

“We are thrilled to confirm you as our official sports ambassador. We are also excited to have you light up the Gateway Sports Festival torch in May. Your presence will undoubtedly inspire many, and we look forward to seeing you actively participate in sports development within the state,” the governor said.

As part of his new role, Joshua will also contribute to the construction of a brand new Anthony Joshua Indoor Boxing Ring, which will be located within a stadium in Abeokuta. This facility will serve as a hub for boxing activities, ensuring that the champion can continue to train and engage with the community.

The Governor also revealed plans to provide Joshua with a new home in Sagamu, further solidifying his connection to Ogun State. “We want you to feel at home, and we are giving you a brand new house in Sagamu to make you feel truly welcome,” he added.

In addition to his new title, the Governor encouraged Joshua to collaborate with Ogun’s Director General of the National Sports Commission and the state’s Commissioner for Sports Development to organize a boxing championship in the state, further promoting the sport and identifying new talents. “We want you to help us plan tournaments leading up to the sports festival and mentor young athletes in Ogun State,” said Governor Abiodun.

The Governor also praised Joshua for his achievements, noting that his success on the global stage serves as an inspiration for many young athletes in Ogun State. He highlighted the state’s wealth of talent in sports, music, and arts, which is helping put Ogun on the world map.

Joshua, in response, expressed his eagerness to contribute to the state’s sports development. “I am excited about this opportunity and look forward to working with the Governor and the people of Ogun State to showcase the many talents here to the rest of the world,” he said.

The Gateway Games National Sports Festival, initially scheduled for January, has been postponed to May for technical reasons. In preparation for the event, Ogun State is investing heavily in refurbishing and improving its sports facilities, with a vision to host a world-class event. Governor Abiodun reaffirmed that Ogun State’s commitment to sports as a unifying force for people from all backgrounds is unwavering.

With the announcement of Joshua as the official ambassador, the Governor’s sports agenda for Ogun State looks set to take a new leap forward, making it a key player in Nigeria’s sports development scene.
