Tragedy struck on Christmas Day as gunmen launched a deadly attack on several communities in Nyiev-ya, Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State, leaving at least 11 people dead, News360 Nigeria reports.
The attack, which occurred while residents were celebrating the holiday with their families, also resulted in widespread destruction of property, with homes burned to the ground. Local sources identified the attackers as armed herders who invaded multiple communities, including Ubutu, GSS Anwase, and Tse Azege.
A resident, who wished to remain anonymous, recounted the harrowing events, stating, “The terrorist herders came this afternoon (December 25) and invaded Ubutu and GSS Anwase, killing and burning houses.” The resident further revealed that a local man, Daniel Jam, lost his son in the violence.
Another attack was reported on Ityuluv in the same community, adding to the growing toll of casualties and destruction. “If there is anything the chairman or the government will do, let it be fast. The news coming from Kwande is still not pleasant,” another resident pleaded.
The President General of Mzough U Tiv (MUT) Worldwide, CP Iorbee Ihagh (retired), who hails from Kwande, confirmed the attack, describing it as unprovoked. “Eleven people were reportedly killed during the attack on Kwande LGA yesterday. Many are still missing. Leaders of the affected communities have reported the incident to the police,” he said.
Local sources claim the killings were carried out by armed herders and militia groups, escalating tensions in a region already grappling with insecurity. Despite the severity of the attack, the Benue State Police Command is yet to issue an official statement. When contacted, the Command’s spokesperson, Sewuese Anene, stated that she had no information on the incident.
The affected communities have called for urgent government intervention to address the growing threat of violence and ensure the safety of residents.
