Esteemed fans of former Super Eagles winger, Tijani Babangida has raised €85,685 approximately ₦139m from
3,895 donations so far for the ex-Ajax star and his wife, Maryiam, who were severely injured in a road accident on May 9 along the Kaduna-Zaria highway.
The crowdfunding campaign aims to gather €170,000 to support Maryiam’s medical care following the traumatic crash, which also claimed the lives of Babangida’s younger brother and his 18-month-old son, Fadil.
Babangida’s wife lost an eye and underwent facial reconstruction surgery after the accident.
Ajax Amsterdam, alongside Roda JC, VVV-Venlo, and Stichting Breathr, launched the crowdfunding effort, which is backed by Babangida’s former football clubs in the Netherlands, where he played between 1991 and 2001.
A statement on the campaign’s page reads, “The road is still long, but there is hope. His friends from football are joining hands, and we need your help too.”
Babangida, who spent seven years at Ajax, won numerous titles, including an Eredivisie championship and two Dutch Cup trophies.
His contributions to the club are still remembered, and Ajax is now giving back in his time of need.
