The Lagos State government is set to enhance its transportation system with the addition of new rolling stock for the Red and Blue Line train corridors and an expanded fleet of buses in 2025. This announcement was made by Engr. Mrs. Abimbola Akinajo, Managing Director of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), in a video shared on the agency’s social media platforms.
Akinajo outlined ambitious plans to improve public transport for Lagos residents, promising that the new rail and bus additions would better serve the city’s growing population. “In 2025, we promise to serve you better. New buses will join our regulated fleet. New rolling stock is expected to join our train operations,” she stated.
Akinajo also revealed that the Lagos State government, under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, is making progress on the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Green and Purple Lines. These projects aim to further integrate the city’s transport system.
The Green Line, a 68-kilometre metro rail project, will connect the Lekki Free Zone to Marina, while the Purple Line will link Redemption Camp to Ojo near Lagos State University (LASU). These lines will complement the existing Blue and Red Lines, forming part of the Lagos Strategic Transport Master Plan, which envisions six Light Rail Transit (LRT) lines.
The operational Blue Line, a 27-kilometre rail corridor, began commercial services in September 2023 and has since transported 2.37 million passengers on its 13-kilometre Phase 1 stretch from Marina to Mile 2. Phase 2 of the project is currently underway.
Similarly, the Red Line, a 37-kilometre corridor, commenced its first phase in February 2024, connecting Agbado to Oyingbo with eight stations. Passenger operations started in October 2024, with work progressing on the second phase.
Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration has also signed agreements with the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI) and China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) to develop the Green Line. The agreement was formalized during the China-Africa Cooperation Summit in September 2024.
In addition to infrastructure expansion, LAMATA is exploring eco-friendly fuel options to reduce emissions and enhance the payment system for regulated transport services, ensuring greater efficiency and sustainability.
As Lagosians look forward to these advancements, the state’s commitment to modernizing its transport network underscores its determination to address urban mobility challenges, boost economic growth, and improve residents’ quality of life.
