Hoffenheim in advanced talks to sign Gift Orban from Lyon

Date:

German Bundesliga side Hoffenheim is in advanced talks to sign Gift Orban from Olympique Lyonnais, despite interest from Turkish clubs.

The Nigerian striker, who has struggled for consistent playing time this season, is reportedly nearing a move, though it is unclear whether the deal will be a loan or permanent transfer.

Orban, who joined Lyon from KAA Gent in January, has found himself increasingly sidelined after making just five appearances this season, with only three starts.

The arrival of Georges Mikautadze has pushed him further down the pecking order, and his limited role has made him one of the more likely players to leave amid Lyon’s ongoing financial crisis.

The situation at Lyon has worsened, with the club facing the threat of relegation due to severe financial issues.

Recently, Lyon announced debts of £422m, and the French financial watchdog DNCG has banned the club from making signings until their financial situation improves.

Lyon is at risk of losing their top-flight status unless they resolve their financial woes, mirroring the plight of Bordeaux, who were relegated to the fourth tier this summer for similar reasons.

Orban’s potential departure comes as Lyon attempts to reduce its payroll and cut costs.

The club, which boasts a roster that includes former Premier League stars like Wilfried Zaha, Alexandre Lacazette, and Nemanja Matic, has struggled financially since failing to qualify for the Champions League in recent seasons.

This season, they sit in fifth place in Ligue 1, but their future remains uncertain, with all players reportedly up for sale to alleviate the club’s crisis.

Lyon’s financial struggles have had a significant impact on their transfer activities, and January is expected to see several departures as the club looks to balance its books. The situation continues to cast doubt on the future of one of France’s most storied football clubs.
