Wolverhampton Wanderers have swiftly moved to appoint Vitor Pereira as their new head coach, just days after parting ways with Gary O’Neil following a 1-0 defeat to Ipswich. The deal is reported to be agreed in principle, with negotiations continuing between Wolves and Pereira’s current club, Al-Shabab, over a compensation package.
Pereira, 56, who joined Al-Shabab in February 2024, has made an impact in the Saudi Pro League, guiding the team to an eighth-place finish last season and securing sixth position so far this season. Known for his disciplined approach and strong leadership qualities, Pereira brings vast experience, having managed 13 clubs and won six trophies, including two league titles with Porto and additional successes in Greece and China with Olympiacos and Shanghai SIPG.
Despite never having managed in the Premier League, Pereira is familiar with English football. He was close to taking over at Everton in January 2022, but a significant fan backlash led to the appointment of Frank Lampard instead. Pereira’s previous involvement in the Premier League is marked by protests from Everton supporters, who voiced opposition to his hiring, with one incident involving a spray-painted message urging his rejection.
Wolves, however, have placed their faith in Pereira’s ability to improve the team’s fortunes. He is expected to arrive in England later this week and could take charge of training ahead of the club’s next match against Leicester City. Wolves aim to finalize his appointment in the coming days.
The appointment marks a fresh chapter for Wolves, who will be hoping Pereira’s extensive managerial experience and strong leadership can steer the club towards a successful season.
