IPOB Declares Feb 2 Sit-at-Home Across South-East, Slams Soludo Over Market Closure

Date:

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has announced a sit-at-home order across the South-East on February 2, 2026, protesting the continued closure of the Onitsha Main Market and accusing Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo of undermining Igbo economic interests.

In a statement issued on Thursday by its spokesperson, Emma Powerful, the group described the market shutdown as “an unjustifiable economic assault on the livelihoods of thousands of traders.”

“The closure of Onitsha Main Market is not just an administrative decision; it is a deliberate attempt to cripple the economic backbone of the Igbo people,” IPOB said.

The separatist group called on residents and traders to comply with the directive, warning that the protest was aimed at drawing attention to what it termed systemic economic marginalisation.

“We urge all Biafrans in the South-East to observe a total shutdown on February 2 as a peaceful demonstration against policies that impoverish our people,” the statement added.

Reacting to the development, the Anambra State Government defended its decision, insisting that the market closure was a temporary measure aimed at restoring order and safety.

“The government’s actions are driven by the need to maintain public safety and regulatory compliance, not to target any group or community,” a state official said.
