AFCON 2025: Super Eagles Soar to Bronze, Sink Egypt on Penalties

Date:

The Super Eagles of Nigeria ended their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations campaign on a high note, clinching the bronze medal after a dramatic penalty shoot-out victory over Egypt at the Stade Mohamed V in Casablanca.

After a stalemate 0-0 draw through 90 minutes of tense, tightly contested football, the match went straight to penalties. Nigeria showed nerves of steel in the shoot-out, converting four of their spot kicks while Egypt faltered under pressure.

Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali was the hero of the day, pulling off crucial saves — including stops against Egyptian stars Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush — that swung the shoot-out firmly in Nigeria’s favour.

Ademola Lookman stepped up to calmly fire home the decisive penalty, sealing a 4-2 shoot-out win and securing Nigeria’s ninth AFCON third-place finish — an unbeaten record in bronze medal matches.

Despite missing out on a place in the final and a chance at the title, the Eagles’ grit and resilience delivered a morale-boosting win, ensuring they return home with silverware and plenty of pride.
