Energy SEZs Key to Africa’s Growth, OGFZA MD, Jada Tells Continental Parliament

Date:

The Managing Director/CEO of the Oil and Gas Free Zones Authority (OGFZA), Mr. Bamanga Usman Jada, has outlined Nigeria’s renewed strategy for strengthening Energy Special Economic Zones (SEZs) across the continent, during a special parliamentary session at the Africa Economic Zones Annual General Meeting held in Luanda, Angola.

Speaking at the high-level gathering, Jada traced the evolution of Energy SEZs in Nigeria, highlighting their role in attracting investments, expanding industrial capacity, and supporting the country’s shift toward a more diversified energy mix. He emphasized that the zones have become essential pillars for economic growth by enabling manufacturing, logistics, and technology-driven services within the energy value chain.

Jada noted that Nigeria’s Oil and Gas Free Zones have moved beyond serving as tax-advantaged clusters to becoming platforms that support the continent’s broader energy transition. According to him, OGFZA is now focused on integrating renewable energy infrastructure and green-industry initiatives into its operations, thereby aligning with global sustainability trends.

Industry expert Yashwanth Reddy, also speaking on the sidelines of the event, said Energy SEZs remain “a critical pivot for African economies,” explaining that they attract capital, build manufacturing ecosystems, and drive spillover innovation. He described Nigeria’s approach as particularly compelling, as it combines traditional energy expertise with emerging renewable ambitions, offering a unique model for other African nations.

Jada further underscored the importance of harmonising regulatory and operational frameworks among Special Economic Zones across Africa. He said greater collaboration would improve investor confidence, enhance trade flows, and strengthen the continent’s competitive position in the global energy landscape.

The Africa Economic Zones AGM brought together policymakers, regulators and private-sector leaders from across the region to discuss reforms, partnerships and the future of specialised industrial zones.
