President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday participated in an extraordinary virtual meeting of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to address the political crisis in Guinea-Bissau following a coup earlier this week.
The emergency summit, convened via Zoom, brought together West African heads of state and government in a swift diplomatic response to the situation in the West African nation. The Guinea-Bissau military seized power on Wednesday, detaining President Umaro Sissoco Embalo and appointing General Horta Nta Na Man as head of a transitional government for one year.
A photograph released by the State House Media Department showed President Tinubu participating in the high-level virtual session from Abuja. The summit aimed to coordinate regional strategies to restore constitutional order and prevent further instability in Guinea-Bissau.
President Tinubu served as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government for two consecutive terms until June 2025, when leadership was passed to Sierra Leonean President Julius Maada Bio. ECOWAS has faced a series of coups in recent years, making rapid response and preventive diplomacy a priority for the regional bloc.
The extraordinary meeting underscores the commitment of West African leaders, including Nigeria, to regional stability and the rule of law amid ongoing political challenges in member states.
