Ramaphosa Faces Criticism for Granting Nigerians 5-Year Visa

Date:

President Cyril Ramaphosa’s recent announcement of a simplified visa process for Nigerian nationals has sparked significant backlash in South Africa, with some citizens taking to social media to demand his resignation.

Unveiled during the 11th session of the South Africa-Nigeria Bi-National Commission in Cape Town on December 3, the initiative aims to boost economic growth and tourism. However, critics argue it prioritizes international relations at the expense of pressing domestic issues. The decision has prompted widespread online criticism, including an open letter urging its reversal.

In response to the controversy, the presidency clarified that the visa reform is part of a broader effort to modernize and streamline the application process globally.

“As part of creating a more business-friendly environment, we have introduced a simplified visa process for Nigerian business travelers, allowing eligible individuals to obtain a five-year multiple-entry visa,” Ramaphosa explained. Additionally, Nigerian applicants will no longer need to present a passport when applying for this visa.

The announcement comes amid strained relations between Nigerians and South Africans, often reflected in heated exchanges on social media. Critics warn the relaxed visa policy could worsen South Africa’s existing social and economic challenges.

Despite the criticism, the government stands by the policy, emphasizing its role in fostering stronger bilateral ties and promoting economic cooperation between the two nations.
