US-based defender Obiefuna commits to Super Eagles, Hopes to emulate Troost-Ekong

Date:

Promising U.S.-based centre-back Emmanuel Obiefuna has pledged his international allegiance to Nigeria, declaring his readiness to represent the Super Eagles and follow in the footsteps of one of his role models, William Troost-Ekong.

The 21-year-old defender, who stands at an imposing 6 feet 3 inches, made the announcement over the weekend, expressing deep pride in his Nigerian heritage and his long-time dream to wear the green and white.

“I may have been raised in the United States, but my heart has always been with Nigeria,” Obiefuna said. “Playing for the Super Eagles has been a dream of mine, and I’m ready to give everything if given the chance.”

Obiefuna, known for his physical presence, aerial ability, and tactical awareness, has honed his skills in the competitive U.S. college soccer scene. He played two seasons (2021–2022) at Niagara University, where he made 35 appearances (32 starts), scoring once and providing an assist.

In 2023, he transferred to the University of the Pacific, adding 26 games and 20 starts to his resume, again scoring a goal and assisting once.

Inspired by Super Eagles vice-captain William Troost-Ekong, Obiefuna says he hopes to emulate the leadership and consistency shown by the Nigeria international.
“Troost-Ekong is someone I look up to a lot — not just because of his game, but how he leads on and off the pitch,” Obiefuna said.

“I hope to follow a similar path, represent Nigeria with pride, and make a lasting impact.”

With Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to refresh the national team with young talent from the diaspora, Obiefuna’s commitment comes at a promising time. The Nigeria Football Federation has been closely monitoring players of Nigerian descent abroad as part of a broader strategy to strengthen the Super Eagles’ squad ahead of key international competitions.

Obiefuna joins a growing list of dual-national players eager to don the Nigerian jersey, bringing with him not only defensive strength but also a passion rooted in heritage and national pride.
