Adeleye Commiserates with Kano Gov Over Death of Athletes, Officials

Date:

Former Technical Director of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Sunday Adeleye, has expressed profound sorrow and solidarity with the people and government of Kano State following the tragic loss of athletes and officials who were returning from the recently concluded Gateway Games in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

On Saturday, a bus conveying the Kano team reportedly veered off the Dakatsalle Bridge in Kura Local Government Area, resulting in a devastating accident.

The crash claimed the lives of at least 21 members of the contingent, while others sustained varying degrees of injuries.

In a heartfelt condolence message, Adeleye said, “I commiserate with His Excellency, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, his cabinet and the entire people of Kano State over this tragic and unfortunate incident.

“May we never witness such a calamity again.”

“These were young, vibrant individuals who had gone to represent their state with honor and pride.

Their passion and dedication to sport and service will never be forgotten.”

Describing the incident as a national tragedy, Adeleye called for stronger safety measures for athletes traveling across the country.

He said, “This heartbreaking event reminds us of the urgent need to prioritise the safety and welfare of our athletes—not just on the field but also off it.

“Sports should unite us in celebration, not in grief.”

He also urged the families of the victims to stay strong during this incredibly difficult time.

“To the bereaved families, I say, may you find strength in the memories of your loved ones and the legacy they leave behind. The entire sporting community mourns with you.”

Kano State finished 13th at the Gateway Games, securing a total of 29 medals, including six gold, before the tragedy struck.
