PDP Accuses Tinubu’s APC of Plotting One-Party State

Date:

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has launched a scathing critique of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, accusing it of systemic misgovernance, deepening corruption, and endangering Nigeria’s democracy. This was contained in a communique issued at the end of the PDP’s 99th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on Tuesday, May 27, 2025.

In its official statement, the NEC expressed “serious concern over the sorry and melancholic state of affairs of our Nation under the irredeemably exploitative, insensitive, and anti-people All Progressives Congress (APC) administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”

The PDP NEC specifically pointed to worsening insecurity nationwide, citing the escalation of banditry, terrorism, and communal violence, which it attributed to the President’s “apparent negligence and abdication of his constitutional duty to ensure the safety and security of the nation and her citizens.”

On the economic front, the PDP condemned the state of the economy under Tinubu, linking rising poverty levels to “ill-advised and ill-implemented policies” such as the fuel subsidy removal, increased electricity tariffs, and multiple taxation. These measures, it argued, have led to the collapse of businesses, widespread job losses, and a general atmosphere of despair across the country.

The party further alleged that corruption is rampant under the current administration, stating that “diversion of public funds pervades the Tinubu administration, resulting in infrastructural retrogression and loss of investor confidence in our system.”

The communique also accused the APC of attempting to erode Nigeria’s democratic system by orchestrating a one-party state through the suppression of opposition voices.

“NEC stands in firm resistance to the sinister plot by the Tinubu-led APC to turn Nigeria into a one-party totalitarian state,” the statement read, citing alleged intimidation of opposition figures and institutions as part of a broader strategy to consolidate authoritarian power.

Despite these concerns, the PDP used the meeting to reaffirm its unity and commitment to reclaim leadership in the 2027 general elections. It announced the ratification of key committees in preparation for its National Convention scheduled for August 28–30, 2025.

Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State will chair the National Convention Committee, with Governors Ademola Adeleke (Vice Chairman) and Peter Mbah (Secretary) appointed to leading roles. Governor Douye Diri will head the Zoning Committee, with Governors Dauda Lawal and Caleb Mutfwang as Vice Chairman and Secretary, respectively.

On internal matters, the NEC acknowledged a resolution from the South East Zonal Executive concerning the National Secretary position, adding that the matter would be addressed at the next NEC meeting on June 30, 2025.

Concluding the meeting, the PDP underscored its resolve to challenge the APC’s governance and said it remains the strongest alternative for national recovery. “The PDP remains strong, resilient, united and determined now, more than ever before, in leading the charge to rescue our Nation from the vicious grip of the APC,” the party said.

The communique was signed by the Acting National Chairman of the PDP, Ambassador Iliya Damagum.
