Super Eagles midfielder, Frank Onyeka, has opened up about his move to Bundesliga side Augsburg, revealing that the decision was driven by his desire to start games regularly and boost his confidence.
Speaking in an interview with Planet Sport Football Africa which was monitored by our correspondent, Onyeka revealed that his transfer was heavily influenced by his conversations with the coach (Jess Thorup), who expressed a clear need for him in the squad.
“I know everybody knows the reason why I moved to Augsburg,” Onyeka said.
“When I spoke to the coach, he said he wanted me and he needs me. The move was also good for my confidence because I want the best for myself. I want to start games regularly.”
Reflecting on his debut for the club, the 27-year-old admitted to feeling nervous. Despite the jitters, Onyeka made an immediate impact, helping the team secure a victory.
“My debut was a good one,” he said. I was even surprised when the coach called me a day before the game, saying that I was going to start.
“I was so nervous. But with my experience, I was able to help the team get a win.”
Onyeka also weighed in on the differences between the Bundesliga and the English Premier League, noting that the former is much more physically demanding.
“It’s not been easy running here and there, the long ball, and they are very direct, unlike in the EPL,” he said.
“I have learnt the running pattern and the way they play because with two passes – opposing teams are already in your half. So in the Bundesliga, they are so direct.”
Despite the challenges, Onyeka has embraced the experience, especially playing under a coach who knows him well from his time in Denmark.
The Nigerian has made 11 appearances in all competitions making one assist.
“It’s a good experience so far for me playing under a manager that knows you from your days in Denmark,” he said.
“In terms of communication, it made me feel so comfortable. Even the two assistants, they’re also from Denmark, and I know them as well.”
Onyeka’s move to Augsburg marks a significant step in his career, and he is determined to continue improving as he adapts to the high-intensity environment of the Bundesliga.
