The Enugu State Government, in collaboration with Austrian company WANDE Nexus, has signed a $100 million agreement to upgrade water infrastructure under the Sustainable Last Mile Connectivity and Advanced Metering Infrastructure Project. The partnership, sealed at the Government House in Enugu, was attended by Austrian Ambassador to Nigeria, Thomas Schlesinger, highlighting it as a landmark in foreign direct investment (FDI) for the state.
Governor Peter Mbah emphasized the transformative nature of the deal, describing it as a step forward in modernizing Enugu’s water systems to ensure reliable access to clean water.
“We now have an investment of $100 million dedicated to addressing the last-mile connection in our water distribution system. This development underscores the success of economic reforms by the Federal Government and Enugu’s positioning as a premier investment destination,” Mbah said.
The governor noted the administration’s efforts in boosting water production from two million liters per day to 120 million liters but acknowledged the challenge of expanding the distribution network to homes. “With this agreement, we’re resolving the bottlenecks in our water system, ensuring reliable and equitable water supply,” he added.
Austrian Ambassador Schlesinger commended Governor Mbah for his commitment to fostering international collaboration and addressing critical infrastructural needs in Enugu.
“This $100 million investment is a testament to Governor Mbah’s vision and dedication to transforming water management systems for equitable clean water access,” Schlesinger said. He also highlighted Mbah’s efforts in strengthening Austria-Nigeria relations through his visits to Vienna, where he engaged with government officials, international organizations, and investors.
WANDE Nexus Chairman, Dr. Ugochukwu Ugbor, expressed confidence in the venture, citing the conducive business environment and trust established by the Mbah administration.
“Our company is committed to delivering results that will create 500 direct jobs, enhance human capital in water management, and improve health and economic opportunities in the state,” Ugbor stated.
The project reflects Enugu’s broader strategy to attract investment and improve public utilities, promising significant benefits for residents and strengthening the state’s economic profile.
