Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) has received the Corporate Merit Award from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) for producing the highest number of certified and chartered accountants in the country.
According to a statement issued by Mr. Adekunle Adams, Head of the Public Relations Unit at YABATECH, the prestigious award was presented during ICAN’s 2025 Award and Dinner Night held on Saturday in Lekki, Lagos State.
The statement highlighted that ICAN’s first professional examination was conducted at YABATECH, marking a historic partnership between the institution and Nigeria’s foremost accounting body. The college continues to lead in grooming graduates who regularly qualify as chartered accountants.
Receiving the award, YABATECH Rector Dr. Ibraheem Abdul expressed deep appreciation to ICAN for the recognition, affirming the college’s commitment to further enhancing the quality of accounting education in Nigeria.
“We are humbled by this honour. It encourages us to continue contributing meaningfully to the development of the accounting profession,” Abdul said.
Also speaking at the event, ICAN President Mr. Davidson Alaribe, who is also an alumnus of YABATECH, noted that the award was in recognition of the college’s outstanding contribution to human capital development in the field of accounting.
“This award is to celebrate excellence and inspire greater impact. YABATECH’s track record speaks for itself,” Alaribe remarked.
The event also featured notable personalities, including Oba George Majekodunmi Okufi, the Alara of Ilara and first indigenous Rector of YABATECH, who also served as ICAN’s first Registrar and Chief Executive Officer.
Other recipients of awards on the night included Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani and Prof. Ademola Tayo, President and Vice-Chancellor of Babcock University, acknowledging their roles in advancing professional excellence in various sectors.
The recognition reaffirms YABATECH’s status as a leading institution in accounting education and a vital contributor to Nigeria’s professional workforce.
