Victor Osimhen delivered a historic performance on Wednesday night, scoring a brace to lead Galatasaray to a resounding 3-0 victory over Trabzonspor in the Ziraat Turkish Cup final, securing the club’s 19th title in the competition and its first since 2019.
The Super Eagles striker was the star at the Gaziantep Stadium, netting in the 46th and 63rd minutes to seal the win after Baris Alper Yilmaz had opened the scoring in the fifth minute.
Osimhen’s brace took his season tally to 35 goals in 39 appearances, breaking Mario Jardel’s 24-year-old record of 34 goals—the most by a foreign player in a single season for Galatasaray.
“It is a great pride to go down in the history of this great club,” Osimhen said post-match, visibly emotional as he lifted his second career club trophy, having helped Napoli to the Serie A title in 2023.
The 3-0 triumph marks a significant milestone for the Istanbul giants, ending a six-year drought in the cup competition.
Their last Turkish Cup win came in the 2018–19 season, when they defeated Akhisarspor 3-1.
Yunus Akgün was another standout performer on the night, providing all three assists, while Dries Mertens replaced Osimhen in the 71st minute to a rousing ovation from the Galatasaray faithful.
On the other end, Trabzonspor struggled to breach a compact Galatasaray defense. Anthony Nwakaeme briefly gave his side hope with a goal in the 74th minute, but it was ruled out for offside.
The result further cements Galatasaray’s legacy as one of Turkey’s most decorated football clubs, and they now stand on the brink of a historic domestic double, sitting eight points clear of Fenerbahçe at the top of the Süper Lig with five games remaining.
If Osimhen’s form holds, both personal glory and collective triumph seem destined to follow.
