Oando Repairs Ruptured Pipeline, Pledges Environmental Safety in Bayelsa

Date:

Oando Plc, the indigenous oil and gas firm that recently acquired the Nigeria Agip Oil Company (NAOC), has reported four operational oil spill incidents between October 2024 and May 2025 along its pipeline network in Bayelsa State.

The company disclosed this on Tuesday through a statement issued by its spokesperson, Mrs. Alero Balogun, General Manager, Human Resources & Business Support, Oando Group.

The spills were linked to the NNPC Exploration and Production Ltd (NEPL)/Oando pipeline, particularly in the Ogboinbiri community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, where swamps are used to transport crude oil to the Brass export terminal.

According to Oando, repair works on the ruptured pipeline have been concluded, and a phased replacement of dilapidated sections is ongoing to prevent further incidents.

“Between October 2024 to date, four operational spills occurred. Upon identification of each incident, we swiftly activated emergency response protocols, including the immediate shut-in of the affected wells and cessation of crude delivery through the pipeline,” the statement read.

Containment materials were deployed to curb the spread of the oil, and recovery operations commenced immediately. Joint Investigation Visits (JIVs) were carried out with representatives from regulatory agencies and the affected Ogboinbiri community.

Balogun emphasized that Oando remains committed to environmental safety and community engagement. “We are implementing sectional replacements to mitigate future risks and ensure long-term sustainability,” she stated.

The company reaffirmed its pledge to operate responsibly and uphold the environmental integrity of its host communities, even as oil spill management remains a sensitive issue in the Niger Delta region.
