Zulum Acknowledges Tinubu’s Power on Tax Reform, Warns of Consequences

Date:

Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum, has acknowledged President Bola Tinubu’s authority to push through the controversial tax reform bill, which has already passed its second reading in the Senate. Despite the President’s power, Zulum warned of the potential consequences for the country, especially given the strong resistance the bill has garnered, particularly in Northern Nigeria.

The bill has faced vocal opposition from key stakeholders, including the Northern Governors Forum, the Northern Elders Forum, and individuals such as Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume. These groups argue that the tax reform does not adequately represent the interests of the northern region. Zulum himself had previously stated that the bill could lead to setbacks for both Northern Nigeria and the country as a whole.

In a recent interview with Channels Television, Zulum emphasized his respect for the President’s authority but reiterated that very few governors support the tax reform. “As of now, you cannot get 3 governors in Nigeria that are in support of this Tax law,” he stated, highlighting the widespread concern among regional leaders.

The ongoing debate has also seen criticism of the Senate’s handling of the bill, especially after Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, defended the decision to allow the bill to proceed to a second reading. Jibrin explained that this was done to enable a broader dialogue involving experts and the public, which has drawn backlash from Northern youths.
