Osun Assembly Proposes Six-Month Jail, ₦250,000 Fine for Public Skating

Date:

Lawmakers in the Osun State House of Assembly have proposed stiff penalties for individuals caught roller skating on public roads or sidewalks, including a six-month jail term or a fine of ₦250,000.

The proposal was made during the plenary session on Tuesday as the Assembly deliberated on the “Osun State Skating Restriction Bill 2025” in a Committee of the Whole sitting held in Abeokuta.

According to the Speaker of the Assembly and Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Adewale Egbedun, roller skating should be regarded strictly as an indoor activity due to safety concerns. He emphasized that the bill, once passed into law, would authorize members of the public to apprehend offenders and hand them over to the police.

“Anybody or persons who skate or use roller skates on public roads or sidewalks shall be guilty of an offence and liable on conviction to imprisonment for a term not less than six months or alternative sentencing of payment of a sum not less than ₦250,000, or both,” Egbedun stated.

The bill also provides concurrent jurisdiction to both magistrate and high courts within the state to hear and adjudicate such cases.

The lawmakers resumed another Committee of the Whole to deliberate on a separate bill— the “Osun State Multi-Door Court House Establishment Bill 2025”—before adjourning sitting to Monday, May 12.

If passed, the skating restriction law will mark a significant shift in the regulation of recreational activities on public infrastructure in the state.
