PWD Rail Closure Now May 14, Says Lagos Govt

Date:

The Lagos State Government has announced a postponement of the planned closure of the PWD rail crossing in Ikeja, shifting the date from Wednesday, May 1, to Wednesday, May 14.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Mrs. Bolanle Ogunlola, Deputy Director of Public Affairs at the Ministry of Transportation, confirmed the new date, stating that the delay is to allow residents and motorists ample time to prepare and adjust their travel plans.

“We understand the impact such closures can have and want to minimise inconvenience to road users as much as possible,” Ogunlola said.

All previously communicated alternative routes will remain in effect during the closure, and road users are encouraged to follow traffic instructions from officials and adhere to signage placed along detour points.

The closure, part of the ongoing Lagos Rail Mass Transit Red Line project, is aimed at enabling critical maintenance work at the PWD rail crossing to enhance safety for both vehicular and rail commuters.

The Lagos State Government had earlier announced the closure on March 20, 2025, citing findings from a recent survey conducted after the launch of the Red Line train service. The survey highlighted the need for proactive safety measures along the corridor.

Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, emphasized the government’s commitment to commuter safety. “It has become necessary to implement proactive measures to ensure the safety and security of commuters along the PWD route,” he stated.

During the closure, motorists are advised to use alternative routes via Ikeja or Airport roads. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) will deploy officers to manage vehicular movement and reduce congestion throughout the period.

The government appealed for public cooperation and patience as it continues infrastructure upgrades aimed at modernizing the city’s transport network.
